The Intermodal Networking of Passenger Means of Transportation in Consideration of the User Needs

In the framework of a BMFT funded research project the Deutsche Bahn AG, the Deutsche Lufthansa AG, the TNS Infratest Verkehrsforschung GmbH and the Institute of Transportation at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) arranged the project "Intermodal Networking of Passenger Means of Transportation in Consideration of the User Needs". Main objective of the project was to identify the impediment reasons for intermodal travel behaviour and the barriers of intermodal offerings and to quantify the potential demand for intermodal service concepts for long distance travels. As the long distance travel behaviour of persons with the existing patterns and determinantes can be realised only by an observation in a temporal longitudinal section, an analysis in the main project part was conducted where the travel behaviour of the German population was measured representatively. For that purpose, firstly the basic long distance travel behaviour of 17,000 individuals, including purpose of trip, intensity, modal usage and frequency, were surveyed within the framework of a representative cross section survey. In another partial survey 7,500 trips were determined in detail wheras partly additional modal orientations and estimations as well as questions on innovation propensity were asked. These surveys on mobility behaviour in long distance travel were used to develop a microscopic simulation model of passenger long distance travel demand which generates persons with distinct characteristics and their long distance travel demand on purpose, used means of transportation and date/time of a trip. Additionally to the surveys on the basic long distance travel behaviour, in a sampling of 300 persons the rating of intermodal offerings was surveyed in a stated-preference-study. On the basis of this data a reaction model could be deduced which again was integrated into the simulation model. Therewith it was possible to evaluate several measures in the intermodal offering arrangement and their demand impacts as well as to determine latent potentials of intermodal trips.
